How Long Does Wine Last Once Opened?

After opening, oxygen starts to affect how wine tastes and smells. Sparkling wine lasts about 1-4 days at best with a stopper, whites and rosés 1–3 days, and reds 2–6 days.

The good news? There’s a better way to enjoy wine far beyond those limits.

Want the freedom to choose any wine, any time – without finishing the bottle?

The Idea That Changed How We Enjoy Wine

Coravin was created from a simple idea: wine lovers shouldn’t have to wait for the perfect moment to enjoy a great bottle. Founded by inventor Greg Lambrecht, Coravin was designed to let people pour wine without removing the cork, so the rest of the bottle remains completely unaffected.

"I invented Coravin because I wanted to drink great wine without the pressure to finish the bottle."

FAQ

How long is wine good for after opening? Does wine go bad or expire?

Once a bottle is opened, oxygen begins to change the wine inside. Sparkling wine is typically good for about 1-4 days at best with a stopper, white and rosé wines last 1–3 days when refrigerated, and red wine is usually good for 2–6 days.

Over time, aromas fade and flavors flatten. Wine doesn’t “expire” in the way food does, but it can go bad after opening as oxygen continues to affect it. That’s why opened bottles often feel rushed to finish.

Can you drink wine that’s been open for a week?

In most cases, wine that’s been open for a week will have lost much of its freshness and may not taste as intended. While it may not be harmful, aromas and flavors are often flat or unpleasant.

How should I store opened wine?

Store opened wine in a cool, dark place, with the bottle sealed and kept upright or on its side depending on space. Refrigeration can help slow the effects of oxygen, even for red wines. For wine that tastes as if it were never opened, the Coravin wine by-the-glass system offers a better way.

How long does wine last unopened?

Unopened wine can last years or even decades, depending on the wine style, vintage, and storage conditions. When stored properly, many wines continue to develop and improve over time.

How do Coravin Timeless wine by-the–glass systems work?

Coravin Timeless

The Coravin® Timeless™ wine by-the-glass system is simple to use. Just insert, tip, and pour.

Place the Coravin Timeless system on the neck of a bottle sealed with a natural cork and press down in one smooth motion. The precision-engineered needle gently passes through the cork without removing it.

Tilt the bottle as you would when pouring from an open bottle. Press and release the trigger to pour wine into your glass. To stop the pour, simply return the bottle to an upright position.

Remove the system by pulling straight up. The cork naturally reseals, leaving the remaining wine completely unaffected – ready to be enjoyed anytime, even years later.

Coravin Sparkling

Coravin Sparkling® is designed to keep sparkling wines fresh glass by glass.

Open the bottle and pour as you normally would. When you’re ready to save the rest, place the Sparkling Stopper securely on the bottle. Then use the Sparkling Charger to recharge the bottle with CO₂.

This process helps maintain the wine’s bubbles and flavor, so every glass tastes as fresh and vibrant as the first – for at least four weeks.

What is a Coravin Pure® Capsule?

Coravin Pure® Capsules power all Coravin wine by-the-glass systems. Filled with 100% pure Argon gas, already trusted in the winemaking process, each capsule allows you to pour wine without removing the cork. As wine is poured, Argon gas flows into the bottle, keeping oxygen out so the remaining wine stays completely unaffected.

Does Argon affect the taste of the wine?

Argon is a non-reactive gas that does not interact with wine or affect its character. That’s why Coravin uses Argon gas, already trusted in the winemaking process, to protect still wines from oxygen. As wine is poured, Argon flows into the bottle, helping keep the remaining wine completely unaffected, so every glass tastes just as it should.

How long do the capsules last?

Each Coravin Pure® Argon Capsule allows you to pour up to 15 standard glasses of wine with Coravin Timeless wine by-the-glass systems, or up to 20 standard glasses with Coravin Pivot®.
